“I am different” is Ricardo Urbina's first full-length work, in which the traditional pas de deux in ballet are redefined and the classic role distribution is broken. Inspired by the Muxe, who are recognized as a third gender in Mexico, a space is created to tell one's own story and draw parallels between tradition, discipline, and the experience of otherness. Muxe transcend the binary and possess a rich cultural heritage dating back to pre-colonial times. Combining body and voice, the piece explores questions of belonging and identity, breaking down traditional gender roles and offering a space to express one's identity freely.
Ricardo Urbina was born in Torreón, Mexico, and received their dance training in their hometown as well as at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California and the Hamburg Ballet School. After graduating, they danced for two years with the Federal Youth Ballet before becoming an ensemble member of the Hamburg Ballet – John Neumeier in 2018. In the 2023/24 season, they performed as a soloist with ballettKIEL and is now a freelance dancer and choreographer. Ricardo Urbina has choreographed, among others, for the Federal Youth Ballet, for the New Year's Eve 2024 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and for the choreographers' program of the Hamburg Ballet.
