City Parade

Plain light purple background. In the center, a person stands with one arm extended to the side and the other slightly raised. Behind them, other figures overlap translucently, one with their legs lifted in the air and two with their arms extended sideways. The silhouettes intersect and are distinguished by different colors. At the bottom center, a wheelchair wheel is visible.

On Sunday June 14, 2026 the very first parade dedicated to dance and the people of Hamburg will take place in Barmbek Nord. The City Parade treats the city itself as a stage. Through artistic interventions, public engagement and cross-generational participation, Braves Moves. Courageous Joy., will be put into action.

More than 550 people will get the Barmbek-Nord district dancing! Groups representing hip-hop, Estonian folk dance, roller-skating performances, Salsa Cubana, Irish dance, Bolivian dance, classical Indian dance, Bollywood, contemporary dance, cheerleading, puppet characters, and many more will move through the streets together—filled with joy, courage, and collective energy.

The City Parade will put a spotlight on the diversity of dance cultures and communities living in Hamburg, ranging from choreographies from local artists to community made dances, dance schools, associations and clubs, such as Die Antwort, Contemporary Dance School Hamburg, Erika Klütz Schule, Lola Rogge Schule, HipHop Academy and many more.

    Finalé with the MAI:COMPANY

The finale of the City Parade is choreographed by Hamburg-based choreographer Patricia Carolin Mai. Together with her MAI:COMPANY, she invites everyone to celebrate the self-proclaimed "Day of the Skirt" and hosts a dancing swap event in Stadtpark as the grand finalé of the parade. A dance celebrating the individuality of every body hidden beneath a skirt—in complete freedom of movement.

The City Parade will also mark a special moment between two triennals in Hamburg - the last day of the opening of the 9th Triennial of Photography and the first day of the Tanztriennale. For this reason, the parade begins at Museum der Arbeit, a partner in the Triennale of Photography program, and dances towards the Stadtpark for the finalé.
